The Oil Looks Old and Dirty

A good way to tell your oil is old is if it has turned black and thick,  fresh oil is an amber or light brown color, and it will continue to get darker as time passes. While you shouldn’t be running to replace your oil as soon as it starts looking black, you should change it if you notice it has gotten thicker and dirtier. The oil breaks down over time, and it starts collecting pollutants from the engine, making it turn darker and get thicker. Go and check the state of your oil by removing the oil dipstick. If you can still see the oil through the stick, then it’s still good, but if you can’t, you should get a synthetic oil change now. While you’re checking the color, check the texture as well. It may be messier, but you’ll be able to tell if it’s dirty and polluted. If it feels grainy and gritty, it’s time to get new oil!

Your Dashboard Lights Up

There’s a whole bunch of different warning signs in your dashboard, among them you’ll find one that lights up when you’re running low on oil. The light is set up according to the manufacturer’s oil change recommendations, and you need to reset it when you change the oil. Learn a little bit more about your the meaning of your dashboard signs,  because you don’t want to confuse your check oil sign with the oil pressure sign. If the last sign lights up your engine is at serious risk of damage if you don’ get that synthetic oil change soon.

Your Engine is Getting Noisy

It’s normal for your engine to make some noise, after all, it can’t be completely silent. If the sounds have begun to get louder or different, you might be lacking some oil. If there is not enough oil to lubricate all the metal moving parts that make up your engine, they will grind against each other creating noises that aren’t supposed to be there. If you hear weird noises coming from your engine or whenever you start your car, it’s time to change the oil. Ignoring these noises will only make it worse. They will turn into knocking, rumbling, and roaring and you’ll only be damaging your engine.

Smoke Coming Out of the Exhaust

If you see a transparent vapor coming out of the tailpipe when the weather is cold, don't worry,  it’s completely normal. However, if you see thick smoke coming out of the tailpipe it probably means your oil is way past its prime time, or there might be an engine leak. If the smoke comes with a burning oil smell, there might be some oil burning in the exhaust area and your engine will soon start overheating. Just change your oil before anything bad happens.
